Gambit Core
This game mode revolves around two teams of four players competing against each other in a competitive manner. Each team will spawn on separate maps where they will rotate between three enemy spawn locations. At these locations, enemies will drop motes upon their death, the motes will disappear after a certain amount of time if not picked up. Players will need to pick up these motes and bank them to spawn the boss. Players can lose motes upon death and can hold a maximum of 15 motes at a time. The first team to kill their boss wins.
Why a new mode?
Destiny 2 is a game that thrives on different modes. Crucible sees the most variation with modes like Mayhem, Momentum Control, Iron Banner and more. Gambit currently only has the one game mode and has players feeling burnt out from over playing it. The game mode itself is fun to play, however I think more variation could benefit how people view Gambit as a whole. This mode looks to change the playstyle in a way that fits the gambits core, but shifts things in a dynamic way.
Location Description
The mode described in this document will keep most of the core design the same. One of the changes to this new mode would be the change in the map design. Instead of an open playing area, this map would involve two spiral staircases that are segmented by the upside-down pyramids found in the trials of the nine maps (see image below for the inspiration in color and design). Each team will have a staircase that allows them to see the other team, but not engage with the opposing team. Each platform will be the location of a battle between the players and a blocker. The next section of the staircase will be blocked off by a taken force field with a well to bank motes into it. The players can not progress to the next section of the staircase until the blocker has been defeated. At the top of the staircase will be the boss battle.
Roles
This game mode would also reintroduce the roles seen in Gambit Prime. Instead of the armor worn choosing the role that you have, the player will be able to choose their role upon the Derelict before spawning onto the map. Each player spawns upon a triangle that currently illuminates when stood on, in this game mode the color that the triangle illuminates will be dependent on the role chosen. Players can cycle through the roles before being spawned onto the map. A brief description of the role will appear on the right side of the UI where the bounties are currently displayed in Nav Mode. The illumination of the roles on the player also allows for teammates and the opposing team to see the separation of roles on each player.
The Roles were created with a positive and a negative so that no role would overshadow another and allow for team synergy. These roles would include:
Invader: Defeating the Blocker gives you their privileges and allows you to teleport yourself to the other team’s path and eliminate the other team, this comes with the risk of leaving your team with half health to bolster your own with an over shield. (Color: Red)
Collector: Each mote you pick up counts for two, but due to your duplication skills you will draw the ire of the enemy and become their main target. (Color: White)
Sentry: Majors are your main target but watch out for the hordes as they are bolstered by their majors’ defeat dealing double damage to you. (Color: Yellow)
Reaper: The hordes of the enemy are at your mercy taking double damage but watch out for their majors who will be bolstered by your utter destruction of their hordes and deal double damage to you. (Color: Green)
Combatants
Each of the blockers will consist of a Taken Knight like the current blocker if an enemy team banks 15 motes at once.
The King of the Spire will be a Primeval style boss randomly selected at the start of each match.
The combatants on the staircase will be chosen by the Drifter as similarly to what is currently seen in Gambit. The Majors will be determined based on the class chosen by the Drifter.
Enemy density will be comparable to spawn locations in current Gambit maps. With each blocker needing 25 motes to spawn there will be around 30 enemies.
Enemies will initially spawn at the Blocker locations, out of the player’s vision. If the number of enemies is inadequate for the spawning of a Blocker, then more will spawn from above the staircase and make their way to the players in increments of five.
Game Mode
After spawning on the Derelict, players will have thirty seconds to choose their role before spawning onto the map. If a role was not chosen by the player, they will be given the role of Reaper. The Players team will spawn at the bottom of the Spiraled Staircase. The first wave of enemies will be heading towards the players on spawn. As the players kill enemies, they can pick up the motes and work their way towards the platform. Players are limited to carrying a max of 15 motes at a time and if the player dies all the motes they were carrying will be lost. Major enemies will drop two motes at a time, whereas minor enemies will only drop one mote. If a player dies, they will be able to be revived by a teammate for four seconds before spawning at the previous section of the staircase. Players can also fall off the staircase if they are not observant of their footing.
There will be two platforms where the players will face a blocker. Each of these platforms will initially have a taken barrier to block players from continuing, with a well for banking motes on it. After banking twenty-five motes the blocker will then spawn. Once the blocker has been defeated, the barrier will disappear, and the players will be able to continue up the spire.
The last platform will consist of the King of the Spire Primeval Fight. The first team to make it to this platform will begin the fight and block the opposing team from reaching this point. If members from opposing teams enter the top platform at the same time, then the platform is PVP enabled until only one team is left. The boss will fight will remain the same as current Gambit matches but will include other mechanics. If a player fighting the Primeval is killed, their teammates can revive them, and they will spawn where they died. If no one revives the player before the respawn timer, then they will be spawned at the previous platform and will need to bank fifteen motes to re-enter the fight. If the entire team facing the Primeval is knocked out, then the top platform is open for both teams to try and take on the Primeval. The Primeval will retain all damage no matter which team dealt it. The team to finally take the Primeval down becomes the winner of the match.
Since the opposing team is blocked from fighting the boss, they will have access to send blockers into the top platform. Five motes will spawn a taken goblin, ten motes a taken phalanx and fifteen motes a taken knight. The Invader roles can also bank fifteen motes at the previous platform to invade the opposing side.
Once the Primeval fight has begun, enemies will spawn at the first platform and work their way up the spire in groups of five.
